Cannabis Capsules

You can make highly effective cannabis capsules in the comfort of your own home, using two essential ingredients – cannabis and coconut oil. Both consumption and production of cannabis capsules is safe: the preparation does not require open fire or flammable substances and the “most dangerous” part of the production is the decarboxylation of cannabis in the oven set to 107 °C.

Ingredients and equipment:

  • 5-10 grams of cannabis
  • You can use dried flowers (of female plants) or petals – flowers are obviously more effective.
  • The amount of cannabis can be customized depending on the tolerance, user's preferences, and especially on the potency (amount of the main cannabinoids) of the used material.
  • 1/4 cup of virgin coconut oil
  • Empty gelatin capsules size 00
  • Available in a pharmacy or online.
  • Capsule filler machine
  • You can fill the capsules one by one, but it takes a lot of effort. You can speed up the process by using a capsule filler machine.
  • 10ml syringe
  • Thanks to the narrow tip of the syringe, it is very easy to fill up the capsules without unnecessary loss of precious healing mixture.
  • Slow cooker
  • You can use any slow cooker which is set up to "keep warm" mode.
  • Small food processor
  • You can use a grinder as well, but it takes more time. Alternatively, you can grind cannabis with your hands.
  • Cheesecloth (gauze) – thin cloth
  • Available in supermarkets, grocery stores, or online.
  • Pan
  • Two microwave-safe containers
  • Tin foil
  • Few rubber bands

Production of cannabis capsules:

1. Line the pan with tin foil in order to prevent cannabis from sticking to the pan.

2. Preheat the oven to 107 °C.

3. Use the food processor or other method to grind the buds.

  • Using the food processor: Low speed for five seconds.
  • Using the grinder (or hands): Break down the cannabis into pieces not bigger than a pinkie nail.

4. Spread your cannabis onto tin foil and put it in the oven. Set the timer for an hour.

5. Turn on the slow cooker. It immediately starts to heat up, but it takes a while before it reaches optimal temperature.

6. Measure 60 ml (1/4 cup) of virgin coconut oil and pour it into the slow cooker. Heat up the oil, while the flowers are in the oven.

7. Take the decarboxylated cannabis out of the oven and mash it into powder.

  • Using the food processor: High speed for 20 seconds.
  • Using a grinder: Smash the flowers into very small pieces.

8. Put the smashed flowers into the slow cooker. They should be completely submerged in the coconut oil.

9. Stir the mixture and let it simmer.

  • You can simmer the mixture overnight, but there is not much difference when compared to three hours of simmering. However, longer simmering period won’t do any harm.
  • During first couple of hours, stir the mixture every hour.

10. Set the capsule filler machine according to instructions.

11. Place 50 capsules in the filler according to instructions. Put the caps of the capsules into a container, so they don't get lost.

12. Cut out a square from the cheesecloth or other suitable cloth. It should be a little larger than double the width of the container.

13. Fold the cheesecloth in half, so the layer is twice as thick, and place it over the container. Use a rubber band to tighten the cloth. The cheesecloth will be used for straining the mixture of oil and cannabis later.

14. Turn off the slow cooker and let it cool for about 15 minutes.

15. Slowly pour the content of the cooker through the cloth (directly from the slow cooker, or using a spoon). The oil should percolate or strain into the container.

  • Take the rubber band off the container. Watch out, so the cloth doesn't fall into the container. Squeeze the remaining oil from the mixture. Watch out, the oil is be hot! If you don't want to squeeze the cloth in your hand, use a colander to squeeze as much remaining oil as possible.
  • It doesn't matter if some plant material permeates into the capsules.

16. Get rid of the plant material together with the cloth.

17. Use the syringe to suck the coconut oil infused with cannabinoids up and carefully fill up the capsules. The capsules should not overflow. (In case you clog the tip of the syringe, release some of the oil back into the container, so the tip is free. Otherwise, you can inject too much oil at once and make a mess).

18. Close the capsules (according to instructions for the filler). Basically just place the top on the bottom – you should feel that both pieces “click” together when closing the capsule.

  • It might take more effort than it seems to put them together. That's because of the two bulges that keep the capsule together.
  • If you inject too much oil into a capsule, slowly wipe the oil off the surface.

19. Place the capsules into a refrigerator, where they would last practically indefinitely.
