Australia

In the 1980s Australia was one of the first countries to choose the way of minimizing the harms instead of implementing severe restrictions. A significant part of this policy is to reduce the amount of available narcotics, education strategies aimed at reducing the demand for drugs, and decreasing the addiction-related damage caused to the users and their communities.

As a part of various preventive and supportive programs, the government offers for example needle and syringe exchange, and clean and safe places where the drug use is allowed.

Regarding cannabis, Australia is one of the more liberal countries. Minor violations are usually punished by fine and/or warning. The same applies for possession without the intention to distribute the drug.
