Cannabis liberation day

Although the Netherlands has always belonged among countries with a rather liberal attitude towards cannabis, it was here where a festival calling for a full legalization of cannabis originated, thanks to the efforts of a civic association called VOC Nederland.

The festival is a part of a worldwide series of demonstrations called Global Marihuana March. Its local Dutch version is called Cannabis Liberation Day and takes places in early summer in a popular, easily accessible park in Amsterdam, which, some say, is the greenest one in the city. The event celebrates international cannabis culture, demands tolerance from government and calls for the legalization of growing, consuming and selling cannabis.

The rich cultural program on the main stage includes a wide range of distinguished speakers, bands and DJs from the Netherlands and abroad. The place also boasts a spacey festival town with cannabis markets, workshops, discussion panels, accompanying program, and of course a lot of thematic tasty refreshments. More than fifty different stalls present the work of local producers, as well as the latest contributions from all over the world.

Despite its relatively short existence, the event has already gained a reputation as one the friendliest gatherings of cannabis users and supporters in the Netherlands and in whole Europe. This is surely helped by the fact that the entrance to the festival grounds in the so called Flevopark is free for all visitors.
