Effects – Headaches

People who suffer from headaches know how debilitating they can become. It is estimated that 4 to 5 percent of world population suffer from the chronic daily headaches, and that those can be often accompanied by vomiting, nausea and hypersensitivity to light.

Conventional Treatments versus Cannabis

The most common type of headaches is called migraine, affecting around 18 percent of women and 6 percent of men. There are currently about twelve different classes of pharmaceuticals used for the treatment, however prescribed sedatives and minor tranquilizers like Valium come with a long list of possible side effects.

Patients are therefore looking for alternatives and many find relief in smoking, vaporizing or ingesting cannabis. History also indicates that this plant has been used for hundreds of years for the treatment of migraines. The reason behind this is that it has anti-inflammatory, pain relieving and anti-nausea effects.  It also relieves muscle cramps that can accompany migraines.

A very recent study of 121 adults from Colorado, which was published in January 2016, showed that „the frequency of migraine headache was decreased with medical marijuana use“.

Disadvantages of Cannabis Use

It is important to note that, while there are many benefits of cannabis in the treatment of headaches, it cannot be denied that heavy and constant use may as well cause them – either as a side effect of inhaling too much smoke, or as a direct effect of being under the influence (“stoned”) for too long.
