Progress and new trends in cannabis treatment.

The presentation opens with a description of the substances contained in cannabis, their development in the plant and also the preparation of active substances for treatment. Then the discoveries of cannabinoid receptors and endogenous ligands for these receptors in the brain are mentioned. The emphasis is placed on the theme of effects on various patients, the medical contribution of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – as well as the importance of including antipsychotic cannabidiol (CBD), as tested on healthy subjects. The importance of cannabinoids as well as terpenes and flavonoids contained in the plant is stressed. Subsequently, the author comments on the impact of cannabinoids on children and adolescents with respect to the development of the human brain in the young age and the possible dangers of marijuana use. Various ways of using cannabis and its products in treatment are listed. The lack of homogeneity in material for smoking is mentioned, as well as the positives of suppositories, the application of specific strains to specific diseases, cancer, the risks involved in buying medical cannabis from the black market and the risk of overdose. The optimism is that cannabis treatment of almost all diseases will be possible in the future.
