Cannabis Cup

The High Times Cannabis Cup is a sort of a world cup of cannabis. It was founded by a then-editor in chief of a magazine, Steven Hager, and, until recently, it used to take place each year in November in Amsterdam. The event includes testing and rating of popular cannabis varieties from different seedbanks by judges from all over the world.

The best of

The judges in Amsterdam used to choose the overall winner, as well as the best new product, the best stall, the best hash and so on. A team of VIP judges then decided which company created the best indica, sativa and hybrid strain, which made the best local – Dutch – hash and which imported hash was the best. The High Times Cannabis Cup also featured concerts, seminars and a trade fair of companies from the cannabis industry.

Going overseas

In 2010, the High Times Cannabis Cup took place in the USA for the first time. The High Times magazine now holds Cannabis Cups in north and south California, in Denver, Michigan, Seattle and Portland. The related High Times Medical Cannabis Cup celebrates medical cannabis in those states where this treatment is legal. The U.S. Cannabis Cup takes place in the states which allow recreational use of cannabis. Just like at the High Times Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam, the judges rate cannabis varieties in a number of categories with the winner being awarded a cup. Teams of experts choose the best indica, the best sativa, the best hybrid, extracts, edibles, as well as the product with the highest THC content. The visitors vote for the best stall, products and various smoking utilities.

Unfortunately, the official Cannabis Cup took place in Amsterdam in 2014 for the last time due to an unfavorable political development.
